Migrating from Wix to Shopify: when it pays off, what it costs and how to keep your SEO

Nico Bértolo · 2026-10-12

In short

  • Moving from Wix to Shopify pays off when the store already sells and Wix falls short: a large catalogue, variants, email, several markets or mobile speed.
  • Products and customers move via CSV exports or a migration app. The delicate part is SEO: every old URL must redirect to its new one.
  • With a professional, a Wix to Shopify migration with an adapted theme usually costs €1,500–€4,000; with a custom design, from around €4,000–€5,000.

Wix is a good way to start: drag blocks, publish, sell. The trouble starts when the store grows. More products, more variants, email campaigns, ads that demand a product page that converts… and a platform that starts needing workarounds. Here’s when the move is worth it, what comes with you, and how to do it without Google making you pay for it.

Wix or Shopify: the difference that actually matters

Wix is a website builder that can sell. Shopify is an ecommerce platform that can build websites. When online sales are your business, that changes everything: checkout, stock, international markets, the app ecosystem and integrations with email (Klaviyo) or ads are built for selling first.

Signs your store has outgrown Wix

  • You have more than 100–200 products or lots of variants, and managing them is painful.
  • You want serious email flows (abandoned cart, post-purchase, repeat purchase) and the integrations fall short.
  • You sell, or want to sell, abroad with prices, languages or currencies per market.
  • The store is slow on mobile and every design improvement is a fight with the editor.

What migrates (and what doesn’t)

  1. Products: Exported from Wix as CSV and imported into Shopify, or moved with a migration app. Check variants, images and descriptions: they rarely arrive perfect.
  2. Customers: Exported from Wix contacts. Passwords don’t transfer, so customers will need to activate their Shopify account. A well-written email avoids confusion.
  3. Past orders: They don’t move over as they are. To keep the history inside Shopify you need a paid migration app; otherwise, keep it in a file.
  4. Design: It doesn’t migrate. The store is rebuilt on a Shopify theme: the chance to redesign whatever wasn’t selling.

How to migrate without losing SEO

  • Product: Wix: /product-page/name → Shopify: /products/name
  • Category: Wix: your custom path → Shopify: /collections/name
  • Blog: Wix: /post/name → Shopify: /blogs/news/name
  1. Crawl the current site: List every URL and flag the ones getting Google traffic (Search Console shows you).
  2. Build the redirect map: Each old URL to its new one. Shopify lets you bulk-import 301 redirects from a CSV.
  3. Keep what ranks: Don’t casually change titles and descriptions of pages already on page one.
  4. Switch the domain and submit the sitemap: Point the domain to Shopify, verify it in Search Console and submit the new sitemap.

Done this way, you keep your authority. At MAPS Therapy we changed platform and architecture without losing any SEO authority, and conversion rose 50%. More in our Shopify SEO guide.

What it costs and how long it takes

  • Data only, with a migration app: from around €50–€300, plus your time reviewing.
  • Professional migration with an adapted theme and redirects: usually €1,500–€4,000.
  • Migration with a conversion-focused custom design: from around €4,000–€5,000.

Our migrations with redesign take about five weeks on average, and the Wix store keeps selling until switch-over day. The number that matters isn’t the migration price but how much more you sell afterwards.

Migrating without redesigning is moving house with the same broken furniture. If you’re moving anyway, move to sell more.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move my Wix store to Shopify?

Yes. Products and customers are exported from Wix and imported into Shopify via CSV or a migration app. The design doesn’t migrate: the store is rebuilt on a Shopify theme.

Will I lose Google rankings moving from Wix to Shopify?

Not if you 301-redirect every old URL to its new one, keep titles and copy that rank and submit the new sitemap. Without redirects, you will lose traffic.
