Shopify SEO: the technical guide to help Google understand your store
Nico Bértolo · 2026-07-31
In short
- Shopify handles part of technical SEO out of the box, such as the sitemap and canonical tags.
- What makes the difference is well-built collections, content and internal linking.
- Collections are usually the pages with the most ranking potential in a store.
Shopify is a good foundation for SEO: it generates the sitemap, manages canonical tags and lets you edit titles and descriptions. But a good foundation isn’t the same as ranking. Here’s what to review.
What Shopify already does for you
- Generates the sitemap automatically at /sitemap.xml.
- Adds canonical tags to avoid duplicates between collections and products.
- Lets you edit the title, description and URL of every page.
- Allows you to customise robots.txt if needed.
What you need to take care of
- Work on your collections: Useful copy, a title built for search and well-ordered products. They’re usually the pages with the most potential.
- Take care of product pages: Your own descriptions, not the manufacturer’s, and answers to the questions customers search on Google.
- Optimise images: Descriptive file names, alt text and a size that doesn’t slow the page down.
- Link internally: From collections to products, and from the blog to the collections you want to rank.
- Check structured data: Product, price, availability and reviews help you stand out in the results.
Watch out for filter and translation apps: some create thousands of near-identical URLs that confuse Google. Check in Search Console which pages are being indexed.
How to measure it
Connect the store to Google Search Console, submit the sitemap and review each month which searches bring you traffic, which pages are indexed and which show errors. It’s the most important free tool for a store’s SEO.
At OPLINX we implemented the on-page SEO and GEO foundations so the store appeared both on Google and in AI assistants’ answers.
