Shopify themes: free, paid or custom, and how to choose the one that sells

Nico Bértolo · 2026-10-26

In short

  • A theme doesn’t sell on its own. Choose the one that handles your catalogue and mobile product page best, not the prettiest demo.
  • Shopify’s free themes, Dawn and the Horizon family, are fast and solid. A paid theme is a one-off purchase and pays off when it replaces monthly apps.
  • A custom theme makes sense once the brand already sells and the template falls short, not for launching.

Choosing a theme is one of the first questions on Shopify and one of the biggest time sinks. What decides whether a store sells is how the product page, collections and cart work on a phone.

Free vs paid themes

Free themes are made by Shopify: Dawn, long the default, and the Horizon family introduced in 2025. Paid themes are made by independent studios and sold in the Theme Store as a one-off purchase, usually a few hundred dollars, with updates included and a licence for one store. You pay for solved features and support, not for prettier design.

Five tests before you choose

  • Filter by catalogue size before style.
  • Browse the demo on your phone: product page, collection and cart.
  • Run the demo through PageSpeed Insights.
  • Try the theme in your store with your own photos and copy.
  • Check the last update and recent reviews.

When a custom theme is worth it

When the store already sells, you know what’s failing and no theme lets you fix it. Most of our projects take a middle path: a solid theme with custom sections for what makes the brand different. More in Shopify store redesign.

Nobody buys from a store because of its theme. They buy because they find what they want fast and trust what they see.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Shopify theme?

There isn’t one best theme for every store. The best one handles your catalogue and mobile product page well, loads fast and is actively maintained.

Do I lose anything when changing Shopify themes?

You don’t lose products, orders or customers. You do need to rebuild sections and review apps, tracking pixels and anything the old theme displayed.
