Shopify reviews: how to get more, where to show them and what the law requires

In short

  • Most customers don’t leave a review because nobody asks at the right moment. Ask once they’ve used the product.
  • Reviews sell where the doubt is: next to the price, near the buy button and in the cart.
  • Since May 2022, EU rules require you to say whether and how you verify reviews. Fake reviews are banned.

A first-time visitor isn’t asking whether the product is good, but whether they can trust you. Reviews answer that better than any copy you write, because you didn’t write them.

How to get more reviews

  • Ask after use, not after purchase: days after delivery for fashion, two or three weeks for skincare or supplements.
  • Let customers rate with one click from the email.
  • Send one reminder, no more.
  • Ask explicitly for photos.
  • Thank reviewers with a discount for reviewing, never for reviewing positively, and disclose it.

Where to show them

Stars and count by the product title, two or three reviews that answer real doubts near the buy button, stars on collection cards and customer photos in the gallery. Apps such as Judge.me, Okendo, Yotpo and Loox cover this; pick one that integrates with your email tool, adds rating structured data and doesn’t slow the store.

What EU law requires

Under the Omnibus Directive, in force in Spain since 28 May 2022, if you display consumer reviews you must state whether and how you check they come from real buyers. Fake or commissioned reviews, and showing only positive ones as if they were all of them, count as misleading practices.

What you say about your product is advertising. What a customer says is proof.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get more reviews on Shopify?

Ask by email once the customer has used the product, with one-click rating, a single reminder and an explicit request for photos.

Do I have to say whether my reviews are verified?

Yes. In the EU, if you show consumer reviews you must explain whether and how you verify that they come from customers who bought or used the product.
