Selling in Europe with Shopify Markets: languages, prices, VAT and shipping without a store per country
Nico Bértolo · 2026-10-19
In short
- You don’t need one store per country. Shopify Markets lets one store serve several markets, each with its own language, currency, prices and domain or subfolder.
- EU VAT isn’t a blocker: above €10,000 a year in cross-border sales to consumers you charge each country’s VAT and file it all at home through the One-Stop Shop (OSS).
- What stops foreign shoppers isn’t the language, it’s doubt: delivery time, shipping cost and returns. Answer them on the product page, in their language and currency.
Many brands get the odd order from abroad without trying. That’s the clearest sign there’s a market outside. Instead of opening a new store per country, use one store that adapts to each market.
What Shopify Markets is
Shopify Markets groups countries into markets and lets you set, for each one, the language, currency, prices, domain or subfolder, shipping and payment methods, all from one admin and one catalogue.
Start with one country, not twelve
- Pick the country that already orders from you without effort.
- Get real shipping rates before setting prices.
- Use round prices in local currency with local VAT included.
- Translate what decides the sale first: product page, cart, shipping and returns.
Domains and SEO
For most brands, subfolders on the same domain (yourbrand.com/fr) are simplest and best for SEO. Shopify adds hreflang tags automatically. Avoid forced IP redirects: offer a discreet prompt and a country selector instead.
EU VAT and the One-Stop Shop
Since July 2021, once cross-border sales to EU consumers exceed €10,000 a year, you charge the customer’s country VAT and declare it quarterly at home through the OSS. Outside the EU, decide who pays import duties: you (no surprises for the customer) or the customer on delivery.
Already getting orders from abroad? We look at your orders by country and tell you which market to open first, at what prices and what to translate before spending on ads. Book a call
Shipping, returns and checkout
Show delivery time and shipping cost per country before checkout, keep returns simple, and enable each market’s favourite payment methods: MB Way in Portugal, iDEAL in the Netherlands, Bancontact in Belgium, Klarna in Germany and the Nordics.
Opening a country isn’t translating the store. It’s removing the doubts of someone who has never heard of you.
