Meta product browsing switched itself on in your ads: what to check before Black Friday

Nico Bértolo · 2026-10-31

In short

  • On October 28, 2026 Meta turned product browsing on by default in ads that were already running, unless the advertiser opted out beforehand.
  • When someone taps the ad, they may first see a page inside Facebook or Instagram with your product and suggestions, before reaching your site. Meta claims 3% more conversions without defining them.
  • This week: check the setting on your top-spending ads, compare clicks with Shopify sessions and run an A/B test before locking things in for Black Friday.

Meta product browsing is a product page Meta shows inside Facebook or Instagram when someone taps your ad, before they reach your website. Until now it was an option you switched on. Since October 28, 2026 it comes switched on in ads that were already running, unless you opted out before that date. If you run a Shopify store and sell through Meta Ads, four weeks before Black Friday you should know where it is active and what it is doing.

  • Oct 28: The date Meta turned product browsing on in running ads.
  • 3%: More conversions on average, according to Meta, in a test run from August 6 to 21. It does not say which conversions or what attribution.
  • Nov 27: Black Friday 2026. Not much time left to test calmly.

What changed in Meta ads on October 28?

In mid-October Meta sent advertisers a notice, with no help article or press release. PPC Land published it in full. The key line: "Starting October 28, 2026, we'll add product browsing to your existing ads." And the explanation: "When people tap your ad, they may see an experience on Facebook or Instagram with product info and personalized suggestions."

The feature already existed as one of the Advantage+ creative enhancements. What is new is the default: from off to on, in ads that were already live. The notice offered an opt-out button before the 28th. After that date, you can only switch it off ad by ad.

Meta has left some things unclear. The notice does not say whether new ads also default to on, or which countries it covers (it refers to a "global" test). Several agencies report that duplicating an ad can switch the setting back on. Treat it as on until you have checked.

What does it change for a Shopify store?

It changes who makes the sale on the first tap. If you have worked on your product page or a landing page for ads (see where to send your ad traffic), with product browsing some people first see a page built by Meta, with its own suggestions, which may include other products.

  • Your numbers stop adding up. CTR will probably go up and landing page views per click go down: a click no longer means a visit to your site. Sessions from Meta in Shopify or GA4 may drop even if purchases hold.
  • Your product page loses weight. Reviews, size guides, free shipping thresholds or Christmas delivery notices do not appear on Meta's page.
  • Meta's 3% is not your 3%. It is an undefined average: you do not know if it counts purchases, add-to-carts or which attribution window. For a brand with a strong product page it could go the other way.
  • If your Instagram traffic already was not buying, this makes it harder to diagnose. We covered that in Instagram traffic that does not buy.

Meta's new Commercial Terms took effect on October 30. According to Relevant Audience, citing Adweek and Meta's preview, they include an "AI Features" section that makes the advertiser solely responsible for what Meta's AI features create or change in their ads. One more reason to know which enhancements you have switched on.

How do you turn off Meta product browsing?

You switch it off per ad, in the Advantage+ creative and Destination settings, as Meta's own notice says. In practice:

  1. Edit the ad: In Ads Manager, Ads tab, tick the ad and click Edit. You can tick several ads of the same format to do it in one go.
  2. Advantage+ creative: In the Advantage+ creative enhancements section, switch off product browsing.
  3. Destination: Scroll to Destination and check personalised destinations: if product browsing appears there, switch it off too.
  4. Advanced preview: Open the advanced preview and go through the Advantage+ creative tab: some enhancements can only be seen and switched off there. Save and publish.

Careful: editing an ad can send it back into the learning phase. Do it this week, not Black Friday week.

What would I do this week?

At 224 we would neither switch it off nor leave it on blindly. We would decide based on where you send the traffic.

  1. Check your 5 top-spending ads: See whether product browsing is on. They are the ones that move the most money in November.
  2. Compare clicks with sessions: Put Meta link clicks next to sessions from Meta in Shopify, for this week and the week before the 28th. If clicks hold and sessions drop, now you know why.
  3. Switch it off where your site sells better: If the ad leads to a well-built product or landing page with reviews, clear shipping and good conversion, switch it off. There your site is your best salesperson.
  4. Test it where you have nothing to lose: In catalog campaigns or on products with a weak page, run an A/B test with Meta's tool: same campaign, with and without. Judge by purchases and margin in Shopify, not CTR.
  5. Freeze before Black Friday: Have the decision made by mid-November and stop touching it. More in our Black Friday checklist.

If you paid for a product page that converts, do not let the ad skip it before you have measured it.

And use the metrics that actually matter to judge it: orders, average order value and margin, not clicks.

Frequently asked questions

What is Meta product browsing?

It is a product page Meta shows inside Facebook or Instagram when someone taps your ad, with product info and personalised suggestions, before sending them to your site. It is part of the Advantage+ creative enhancements.

Since when is it on by default?

Since October 28, 2026 in ads that were already running, according to the notice Meta sent advertisers. If you did not opt out before that date, assume it is on.

Can I turn it off after October 28?

Yes, ad by ad, in the Advantage+ creative and Destination settings when editing the ad. Also check the advanced preview and any ads you duplicate.

Should I leave it on?

It depends on your site. If your product page converts well, you usually want people to reach it. If you are not sure, run an A/B test with and without and decide by purchases and margin.

Why do I have more Meta clicks and fewer Shopify sessions?

With product browsing, a click can stay on Meta's page and never reach your site. Compare link clicks with sessions from Meta before and after October 28.
